Artist Philip Ortelli Residency Period: 20 August- 15 September 2019

Phillip Ortelli’s time at  De Nachtegaal, Residency of NEVERNEVERLAND, takes an end.
We open the doors of the studio and show some bits and pieces of what the artist from Switzerland had been working on over the period of the residency. Most of the time was dedicated to prepare the solo exhibition at Neverneverland that will open on September 27th, at our location in Amsterdam east.
(No worries, no spoilers included in the work in progress presentation!)

NEVERNEVERLAND invites young national and international artists to come and work and research for a period of 5 weeks in Amsterdam South-East.
In addition to this we organise several workshops a year based on the practice of the Artist in Residence given by the artist or other artists we invite especially for the workshops at De Nachtegaal, residency of NEVERNEVERLAND.

Philip Ortelli is an artist working with sculpture, video and animation, oscillating between concept and intuition. His new works materialize one of the most humane abilities: to create inner coherence out of outer incompatible ambivalence. He will show three images of animated, ambivalent rooms as large prints on silk curtains. Some parts of the curtains will be on view for the work in progress presentation as well as some models of new sculptures, the whole body of new work will be shown in the solo exhibition at NEVERNEVERLAND.

About the artist:
Philip Ortelli (Switzerland, 1991), received his Bachelor degree at the Bern University of the Arts, he co-founded the Schwobhaus Bern, a community studio and multivalent artistic and experimental platform for contemporary art. Since 2018 Ortelli holds a Master Degree from the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam and is currently working in Amsterdam and Zurich. His work has been presented in group and solo exhibitions in several institutions and artist-run spaces such as Centre d’Art Pasquart, Espace d’Art Contemporain (les halles), Stadtgalerie Bern, WallRiss, sic! Raum für Kunst, Videokunst, Neverneverland etc.

Urban Sculpture Workhop cost: FREE
THURSDAY 11-18-25 October evenings from 18:00-21:00.

For his period in the residency at De Nachtegaal, Quentin Dupuy will look at the question of monumentality in public space through the angle of the bulky waste compositions that sprouts every morning on the streets of the Bijlmer area.

His research will elaborate an extensive definition of monumentality in which the wastefulness of triumphal arches and baroque fountains will be confronted with the wastefulness of contemporary lifestyles.

About the workshop:

URBAN SCULPTURE WORKSHOP

During the workshop participants will be encouraged to create in-situ sculptural in the bijlmer (Amsterdam south-east) area interventions using waste materials found on site.

Working with the daily flow of discarded domestic items flourishing at every street corner in the Bijlmer neighborhood, and inspired by temporary public monuments - celebratory altars, gold calfs, gibbets, victory arches and barricades - participants will be encouraged to create in-situ sculptural interventions using found on site materials. These attempts will make use of reglemented waste disposal procedures as a framework of expression and reflexion. Anticipating the collection of bulky waste by the municipality on Friday morning.

The workshop will take place on THURSDAY evenings from 18:00-21:00.

About the artist:

The work of Quentin Dupuy finds its main impulse within an unusual attention given to what one would easily name trash.

Chewing-Gums once chewed, cigarettes once smoked, transaction receipts or endless flows of administrative paperwork, are indexes of excessive activities, wasteful and extravagant energetic overloads which Quentin diverts into sculptural and ornemental interventions.

Quentin Dupuy (FR) is a Master graduate from the Dirty Art Department of the Sandberg Instituut 2018 (NL) and of the Villa Arson (FR). His work develops a poetic and materialist exploration of the Bataillan notion of waste. It adresses the economical and affective streams objects navigate from trash to commodities, from holy to profane, from inert to animated and inversely.

Period: 26 June - 28 of July 2018

In 1883 the International Colonial and Export Trade Exhibition took place in Amsterdam from 1 May to 1 October.
The more than one million visitors could not only get acquainted with all sorts of objects from the colonial areas, but also marvel at 28 'natives' from Suriname, housed in 'the roundabout', a circus tent on the Museumplein.

Interested parties who paid a quarter could take a look at the Surinamese, in three
groups, maroons, indians and creoles.

A family member of Napoleon ordered all Surinamese to be photographed fron face and and profil by the brothers Hisgen in the P.C Hooftstraat, they could be accurately examined ethnographically for their external characteristics.
To conclude the 7-year collaboration between the GRA - Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the NHAA - de Nola Hatterman Art Academy, the GRA asked Tanja Karreman (gallery New Dakota) to put together a Surinamese / Dutch exhibition. This became the exhibition named 'Pure'.
As a starting point for my contribution to this exhibition, I chose the International Colonial and Export Trade Exhibition of 1883.

Tammo will share collages with the residents of the district Amsterdam south east. He will  set up a kind of counter In the middle of the shopping center Amsterdamse Poort where interested people can get acquainted with his collages and the source material collected by him in relation to the world exhibition of 1883.

Tammo researches how one will respond to his images and the story behind them. Moreover, he wants to talk to the residents of Zuidoost, where a big part of the Surinamese inhabitants of Amsterdam live, to find out more about the offspring of the 28 Surinamese on display. The only one so far traced offspring are adopted by Michiel van Kempen (writer and surinamist) and his wife children, twins with Indian roots.

 About the workshop:

The residents of Amsterdam-Zuidoost will make collages on the basis of the
collected images from 1883 by Tammo. Not digital, but analogue.

As an introduction, he will speak about making collages and its history.

The project tries to question the idea of the "superficial image". Derk Over tries to link extreme fantasies of these "larger than life" women to the desires of a generation. Over will try to expose the root of the fantasy that lies behind modern daydreams of glamour, fame and the supernatural.

During the residency Derk Over constructs a small AR concert stage for a miniature holographic Drag Queen. He draws the comparison between Hatsune Miku and Drag Queens. 'We are both illusions that are born from the emotional escapes of a generation. Everybody can see straight through the illusions that we present, but nobody cares. The will to believe in the constructed fantasy of both Hatsune Miku and Drag Queens is bigger than its obvious fakeness. '

The knowledge that fantasies are not real does not weaken them.

About the Artist:

Derk Over, currently residing in Utrecht, is a visual designer graduated from the Sandberg Institute in 2017.

His projects revolve around analyzing and playing with fantasies.

Quote: 'Fantasies to me personally are a fundamental part of existing in this world, as fantasies are a mirror of my emotional state, my dreams, and my desires.

Fantasies of gay culture, outcasts, minorities, millenials, individual dreams, cultural dreams and even dreams of humanity, all visual fantasies are the aesthetics of desire.'

Workshops Skinning Utopia every Friday 17h00-20h00

With 'Skinning Utopias' Arthur Guilleminot aims to research relations with one another, as bodies covered of skin.

Skin is the largest human organ. Along its core functions to the human body, the skin is conceptually the only limit between the "inner" and the "outer", both symbolic representations of what we are made of and what we translate to the world.
Skin becomes our physical reflexibility, but as you experience your own body, it becomes a mental reflexibility; a visual image of yourself. This visual representation of our consiousness is what we intensly advertise digitally nowadays with social media.

Skinning Utopias is an ode to skin diversity.
You are welcome to join the quest to find out about the skins that compose Amsterdam. Wanna be burned ? Freckled ? Hairy ? Stretched ? Loose ? Green ? Quilted ?

WE WANT YOU ! You are invited to join the journey to the discovery of skins. Every week, a workshop will take place at the Nachtegaal, for free, with plenty of materials for all of us to build, to create and to transform our bodies.

About the artist:

Arthur Guilleminot is born in France in 1992. After finishing high school close to Paris he moved to Troyes to study industrial design in 2010. Throughout two internships and 2 years of specialisation he graduated from the Ecole Superieure de design de Troyes (FR). His second internship pushed him to moved from France in 2013 to work for a semester at Emmanuel Babled Studio (Amsterdam, NL). By assisting an artist designer in such events as Milan design week or Venice art Biennale, Arthur discovered the field of designed art. 
After getting his bachelor he decided to expand his visions by not only focusing on industrial design but to work on conceptual and performative objects. He graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Amsterdam, NL), Design Lab department, where he started to experience the link between performance and props design. Arthur joined the Driewieler Collective in 2014 focused in developing objects choreographed by their use.

During the residency, Nikola Knežević will focus on the relationship between material reality and the virtual space of mind. His intrest in the subject stems from the question: How might the physical, non-digital mediums trigger the experience of the virtual space? How do one see, feel and know such a space?

As a starting point for his research, Nikola will use Rene Magritte's painting:

About the artist:

Nikola Knežević works at the intersection between architecture and embodied practices, closely and regularly collaborating with choreographers. In more recent projects, he has been inspired by the virtual spaces that emerge from the body and within the body, the space of memories, dreams and the unconscious. His work takes form of 3D animation, sculpture, text, immersive spatial installation and mise-en-scéne.

A thought from the intangible: The visual, sound, olfactory or palpable senses are convoked in an embodied sensible thought. An experience colored by a dialogue of affects, imagination and sometimes emotions. In short, it is like today's real life of an Artificial Intelligence

About the artist:

Laurent-David Garnier (b. France) works also as an artist under the name Eldee.

In 2015 he got his Master of Fine Arts at the Sandberg Instituut. Before he already got his Master of Chemistry being trained as a perfume maker at ISIPCA, a school for fragrance, cosmetics and flavours. Within his practice Eldee uses fragrance to examine the shared interactions experienced in public and private spaces. According to Eldee, fragrances contain institutional codes and conventions.

About the workshop 'SMELLIT' by Eldee:

The workshop revolved around the sense of smell in our contemporary society in the context of visual arts.

The participants where invited to explore the world around them through the lens of both senses the olfactive and the taste.

About the workshops: Smoke Signal

Richard John Jones will continue to work across performance, installation, ceramics and textiles through a series of material-based workshops. Taking a motif of the smoke signal from his previous performance, his research conducted through these workshops will consider smoke as a temporary marker of presence, a cry for help, a product of violent forces of social oppression or destruction, and conversely as a screen, something that creates opacity.

About the artist:

Richard John Jones (UK) graduated in 2014 as Master in Fine Art at the Sandberg Instituut Amsterdam. Till 2012 he was a Co-Director of Auto Italia South East, London. His work has been shown at EYE Film Museum, Amsterdam; Rond Point Projects Room, Marseille, SPACE, London and the Gwangju Biennial in collaboration with AA Bronson.

“Richard John Jones’ work is concerned with works or histories that have been erased, forgotten or marginalized. He uses domestic craft techniques alongside performance, video and installation.”

About the artist:

Lyubov Matyunina was born in Kaliningrad, Russia and lives and works in Amsterdam since 2010. In 2014 she graduated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie at the VAV-moving image department. In 2014 she won the TENT public choice award. In 2017 she got the Mondriaan Young Talent stipendium.

Her last work was featured on the cover of the summer issue of ART news magazine in New York.

“Matyunina is inspired by possibilities opened by the genre of experimental documentary. Her practice aims at pushing the boundaries of traditional filmmaking and capturing the multilayered notion of absurdism: in her practice, the artist mixes banal everyday events with her unique vision of the world as a fairy tale.”

Final Presentation   "What are we"

Syd D. Doscher, Mitzi C. Manton, Brenda de Vries at De Nachtegaal, residency of NEVERNEVERLAND.

After five intense weeks at De Nachtegaal Syd D. Doscher, Mitzi C. Manton and Brenda de Vries developed new works and experimented with themes of privacy, sexuality and childhood memories of 'het Kraaiennest' in Amsterdam-South East.
Media they worked with are photography, sculpture and writing.

The spectacle of pop-culture created a boom of successful, referential, and to the eyes of some, perfect envied bodies.
These perfect bodies become the idol of millions, role models, but aren’t we worshipping marketed products? Aren’t we aiming the virtual rather than the real?
Under a sleeping spell, our bodies became silicone and fat and our lives a plastic
dystopian reality. We are entrepreneurs of life-styles.

‘… a young-girl myself’

At the starting point of this journey Pedro aimed to understand the current capitalistic mentality and its repercussions in contemporary bodies, sexuality and our surroundings.

During this period Pedro have explored object making, movement in space,
video and sound to create an atmospheric (mesmerising) momentum, reflecting upon notions such as display, isolation, power and the synthetic.

We are happy to welcome you this weekend at our residency De Nachtegaal, where he will present a selection of his most recent work together with a performative act, the outcome of the workshops.

This February, Arnar Ásgerisson has been a resident at De Nachtegaal in Amsterdam Zuid Oost. During this period he has been producing new works that will be presented on Saturday 11th of March. In addition to this NEVERNEVERLAND organises workshops for young adolescents based on the practice of the Artist in Residence  given by the artist. Arnar Ásgeirsson developed a workshop based on 'exploring the adventures of drawing'.

We are happy to welcome you this weekend at our residency De Nachtegaal, where he will present a selection of his most recent work together with the outcome of the workshops. 

His upcoming exhibition ‘Transmutants and Emotional Curves’  is opening Friday 17 March at NEVERNEVERLAND at De Punt.

NEVERNEVERLAND is excited to announce our residency location De Nachtegaal in the Bijlmer, Amsterdam South-East!

Join us this Friday 17 February from 16h00-18h00 for the public opening of De Nachtegaal. Our first resident Arnar Asgeirsson will open up his working studio for a first sneak peek in preparation to his upcoming exhibition ‘FLY HIGH’ opening 17 March at NEVERNEVERLAND at De Punt.

For this year artists Arnar Asgeirsson (IS), Pedro Matias (PT), Rosalinde Christopher Zeidman (NL), Laurent-David Garnier (FR) and Richard John Jones (UK) are invited for a short-term working period and a public presentation. Parallel to this we will run an educational program in collaboration with CBK Zuidoost with workshops for young adolescents to expand their knowledge and skills in art.
